Obesity

Obesity is a chronic health condition that raises the risk for heart disease — the leading cause of death in the United States — and is linked to many other health problems, including type 2 diabetes and cancer (NIH). It can also lead to other chronic health conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, sleep apnea, and joint problems.

Obesity effects 1 in 3 adults in the US. (CDC)

The most common screening tool for obesity is the body mass index (BMI). BMI is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. You can use an online BMI Calculator to see your results. Individuals with a BMI of 25 or greater are at risk for obesity and should talk with their provider.

Your provider may also consider your waist circumference, body fat percentage, and medical history when diagnosing obesity.
